I was sure I had seen the woman somewhere before. But where? I scratched my head as if scratching it would bring back the image of that weather-beaten face, with skin so leathery you could have mistaken it for a lizard’s.

Her eyes were thin slits under dark caterpillar-like eyebrows, and the tip of her long narrow nose was slightly twisted to the right. Her lips were a pale thin line, barely noticeable over her chin that curved upwards towards the shadow of her nose.

Cold fingers slithered over my shoulders and made me shudder when her cold washed out eyes met mine. The thin lips cracked open, revealing the tip of her tongue. I was half expecting it to fork out at me and spit venom. But the tongue simply licked the parched lips, leaving spittle on her chin.

I looked away in fear and disgust and moved on to examine a large glass bowl. Two goldfish were floating rather than swimming in the murky water. I could still make out her shape behind the gloomy liquid. It floated about in a dark wavy haze. Then it disappeared as if engulfed into the abyss. I peeped around the large bowl, and sure enough, the woman was no longer there. I heaved a sigh of relief.
